With dozens of insurance companies to choose from, purchasing life insurance can be a complicated process before you even get into the nuts and bolts of a particular policy. However there are a number of companies that regularly make people’s top 10 lists for best carriers of life insurance.
MetLife (Metropolitan Life Insurance Company)
MetLife is by far the largest company in the industry, with over $50 billion in sales revenue in 2010, and has been doing business since 1868. MetLife is known for its variety of options so the buyers can get exactly what they want. On the down side, their prices are more middle of the road: not overly expensive, but there are much better prices to be found.
New York Life Insurance Company
With a wide array of options, the second largest company in the market also makes top ten lists due to the wide variety of options provided. Its one major drawback is it has not modernized with the times, lacking mobile tools or even the option of paying by credit card. Instead, the only payment option is by check or bank transfer.
Founded in 1875, Prudential is the third largest company in the industry. It does not provide permanent life insurance, but its focus on term life insurance means they can provide it very affordably in comparison to other carriers. Prudential also provides one of the best sets of online tools to help streamline the application process and further reduce costs.
MassMutual (Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company)
Another heavy hitter in size, MassMutual has a long history of financial stability. They offer a wide variety of riders (options for additional coverage) for their policies, providing additional flexibility in what they can offer. On the downside, they have a limited online presence.
State Farm does not make the top ten as far as size is concerned, but it does routinely make lists of favorites. Range of options, price, customer service and online availability together make it an attractive product for insurance shoppers.
Allstate is an affordable option that offers a wide range of basic policies. However, it lacks many of the specific riders that other companies offer for maximum flexibility. Online quotes and purchases are also available, and it has a solid mobile app that allows you to review your policy and make payments. However, supplemental online materials to help you better understand insurance in general are lacking.
Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company
Founded in 1857, Northwestern is built on a rock-solid financial foundation. It also offers a wide range of policies and riders as well as low minimums for those shopping on a budget. However, like many other old, established companies, it suffers from a lack of online and mobile tools.
This, of course, merely scratches the surface of available life insurance companies. Other well rated companies include:
- Principal Financial Group
- Aflac Incorporated
- TIAA-CREF (Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association – College Retirement Equities Fund)
- Lincoln National Life Insurance Company
